Late night we visit the St James church in Innsbruck where there is a big altar piece, full of gold and glory, with, in the middle, the simple, small, but overpowering altar piece by Lukas Cranach. For some years now I have had his equally beautiful painting of Luther, and admired his works of Luther's parents and of Melanchton. But all his paintings tell of a most gifted author. For a long time I wanted to see this piece, but what a disappointment. One cannot see it well, because an electronic device keeps you at a distance. The piece is overwhelmed by the huge gold fitting in which it is exhibited. Sad. What an powerful depiction.
